The 717-200: End Of The Line

Jet City Aircraft is pleased to present our final aircraft in the McDonnell Douglas twinjet series, the 717-200.

As you may know, most of our aircraft are commercial releases. We chose to make the 717 a freeware release for two reasons.

First, and most importantly, we wanted to thank our friends, supporters, and of course, our customers… so this aircraft is our gift to them.

Second, we know there are many people who have wondered about the quality of our aircraft, but were hesitant to purchase. The freeware release of the 717 will allow everyone the opportunity to see for themselves how well constructed and thorough our airplanes are.

You will be hard pressed to find aircraft of this quality anywhere. Just take a look at the shape of the airplane, or the detail in the fuselage and wing textures. Zoom in on the landing gear for a closer look. Compare the airplane to photos of the real 717 and you’ll see that we are indeed very serious about making quality aircraft. We don’t just build them and walk away… we fly them in our simulator, just like you.

And while most designers have abandoned FS2002 users, you will be pleased to know that all of our DC-9/MD-80/MD-90/717-200 aircraft work in both FS2002 and FS2004.

We hope you enjoy the 717-200!

The 717-200 Family

The Boeing 717-200 is the world's best jetliner specifically designed for the short-haul, high frequency 100-passenger airline market. The twinjet makes effective use of today's technology to lower operating costs, and it offers breakthrough simplicity, reduced noise and emissions, and big jet comfort.

The airplane was designated the Boeing 717 following the merger of McDonnell Douglas and The Boeing Company in 1997. The 717 entered a rigorous flight-test program in September 1998 and received joint certification a year later. It was the first commercial airplane to receive a Concurrent and Cooperative Certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Europe's Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA). The FAA and JAA jointly certified the 717's first major upgrade to the airplane's flight control computer and flight management system in October 2000.

Final assembly of the 717 takes place at the Boeing plant in Long Beach, Calif. The launch customer, AirTran Airways of Orlando, Fla., took delivery of the first 717 in September 1999.

The standard 717-200 has a two-class configuration with 106 seats. Its passenger-pleasing interior features a five-across-seating arrangement in economy class, with illuminated handrails and large overhead stowbins.

The two-crew flight deck incorporates the industry's most modern and proven avionics technology, configured around six interchangeable liquid-crystal-display units and advanced Honeywell VIA 2000 computer systems similar to those in other new Boeing jetliners.

Flight deck features include an Electronic Instrument System, a dual Flight Management System, a Central Fault Display System, and Global Positioning System. Category IIIb automatic landing capability for bad-weather operations and Future Air Navigation Systems are available.

Two advanced Rolls-Royce 715 high-bypass-ratio engines power the 717. The engine is rated at 18,500 to 21,000 pounds of takeoff thrust, with lower fuel consumption and significantly lower noise and emission levels than the power plants on comparable airplanes.

The 717 wing span is 93.3 feet (28.4 meters) and overall length is 124 feet (37.8 meters). Maximum takeoff weight for the 717 is 110,000 pounds (49,895 kg). Nonstop range goes up to 1,647 statute miles (1,430 n.mi. / 2,645 km).

After careful assessment of the challenging 100-seat market, Boeing announced that it will conclude 717 production in 2006 after delivering on current customer commitments. The 717 will continue to deliver unsurpassed economy and value to our airline customers for years to come.

About the Jet City Aircraft 717-200

For this project, we have meticulously recreated the Boeing 717-200 for use in FS2002 or FS2004.

The airplanes are accurately modeled in shape and scale, and uses all of the advanced features that today's design tools have to offer, including full animation, dynamic shine, and reflective textures. Great care was taken to make best use of display resources to ensure that the frame rate hit remains minimal. In simple terms, this airplane is full of detail and is an amazing replica of the real aircraft.

And speaking of detail, unlike some other designers which attempt to "wow" potential customers with a lot of descriptions of useless things like cardian lugs, torque flanges, and track rollers, we'll take the less dramatic approach and tell you what you really want to know about our planes. You know, the stuff that matters.

Aircraft Visual Details

All of our 717-200 aircraft feature:

48-sided fuselage for a more rounded appearance and less distortion of textures
Accurate "Double Bubble" fuselage shape
Reflective textures with dynamic shine, including reflective cockpit window glass
High resolution textures for added clarity
Amazing detail, from wheel lugs to fuselage rivets
Complete lighting system, including rotating beacons, strobes, nav lights, taxi lights, tail logo lights, inspection lighting, interior cabin lights, cockpit lighting, and cargo bay lights
Full detailed and accurate animation of landing gear, flaps, spoilers, ailerons, elevator, rudder, and horizontal stabilizer trim
Opening forward main passenger door, operational main passenger door air stairs, opening forward galley service door, and opening forward and aft lower cargo doors.
Animated ground service equipment, including catering trucks and belt loaders
Smooth, multi-stage thrust reverser deployment
Independent suspension, sensitive to aircraft weight, balance, and speed
Gear compresses upon touchdown
Views of the wings for spectacular takeoff and landing replays. Watch the flaps, spoilers, and ailerons in action!

Instrument Panel and Aircraft Sounds

The Jet City 717-200 aircraft does not include a custom instrument panel or aircraft sounds. When you install the aircraft, it uses a default panel and sounds that are included with the simulator. Of course, you are in no way limited to using that configuration, as other options, both commercial and freeware, are available.

Other Details

Fully compatible with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of Flight and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002
The main passenger door and main passenger air stairs are opened using separate commands, so you can use jetways or non-jetway gates realistically
Integrates easily with your choice of instrument panels and sounds
All repaints are assigned to the correct aircraft variant, and as such, may or may not include all of the features mentioned above, depending on that particular aircraft's configuration.
We allow third party repaints of our aircraft, so long as repainters adhere to our repaint policy which can be found in the Repainter Support area at the Jet City Forums.
